Title:

UCI Africa Tour: South African Ian McLeod takes back the leader’s jersey

Date:

03.02.2010

Description:

The Tropicale Amissa Bongo in Gabon took place from 19th to 24th January over six stages and a total of 719km. Overall winner is French professional rider Anthony Charteau (Bbox Bouygues Télécom)

South Africa’s Ian McLeod finished the six days of competition just 11 seconds behind Charteau. This, together with a second place in stage four, was enough to put him back into the UCI Africa Tour leader’s position in front of Morocco’s Abdelatif Saadoune and Charteau.

Although Saadoune slips down to second, Morocco remains at the top of the nations ranking with 477 points, 23.36 points ahead of South Africa with Eritrea (200 points) in third. UCI Continental Team MTN Energade remains in 1st position of the teams ranking in front of French UCI Professional Continental Teams Bbox Bouygues Télécom and Cofidis, le Crédit en Ligne.

The next events on the UCI Africa Tour calendar will be the Tour of Cameroon (February 15th – 26th) and the Tour of Mali (March 7th – 13th).

In the field of formation and development, the UCI Continental Cycling Centre in Potchefstroom, South Africa, has launched a new website www.africanccc.com. The site contains information about the Centre, which was established in 2005 and has already trained more than 200 African cyclists, preparing some for international competition such as UCI World Cups and the Olympic Games.

The website, which is in both English and French, also contains updated cycling news from the continent, information on the athletes, their programme, results and photos.
